Thin Films -- On The Go Lesson
Light is made up of many different wavelengths, and each wavelength corresponds to a unique color. On thin surfaces, such as soap bubbles and oil slicks, light reflecting off of the top of the film interferes with light reflecting off of the back of the film. The different thicknesses of the film in different areas are what lead to the different colors.

Giant Pumpkin Story -- On the Go Lesson
Anyone who has grown giant pumpkins will agree, the life cycle of a giant pumpkin is fast, enormously strong, and furious. Many things are needed to grow a large pumpkin, including a giant pumpkin seedling, and preparing the soil so it has the correct nutrients. Giant pumpkin record holders also share that they mound the soil over the vine to create a double root system. Most of the prized pumpkins are at least 10 feet from the main root. Bugs and Blades
A pest is a living thing that causes people harm. Mosquitos are a common pest people deal with in Iowa during the summer. Pests in crop fields harm plants causing less yield or damaged harvest. There are three main types of pests that growers deal with: insect pests, weeds, and diseases. In these three lessons, you will learn about each of these groups of pests. These lessons will use the principles of Integrated Pest Management in managing crop pests.

This curriculum includes three lessons, one for each pest group. The lesson directions are designed to be used with the included set of specimens. Fresh field samples could also be used. Each lesson is an introduction to that pest group with a focus on identifying pest issues for better management of pests.

Gelatin and Meat Protein -- On the Go Lesson
What is meat? Meat is made up of muscle fiber, connective tissue and fat. Muscle fibers are comprised of protein. Proteins are made up of many chains of amino acids. When you eat meat, the digestive juices in your stomach and intestine break down the meat protein into basic units called amino acids. The amino acids then can be reused to make proteins for your own body. When meat is cooked, a chemical reaction occurs, and the protein is denatured or changed. Use gelatin to explore this concept.
