Deductible Livestock Costs for Adjusting 2024 Income Tax Returns
Estimated deductible costs of production for use in adjusting farm expenses to exclude the cost of producing home-consumed farm produce.

The costs include all cash costs, depreciation, and deductible production costs of homeraised feed. No charge is made for the farm operator’s labor. If hired labor or purchased grain and roughages are used to produce these products, or if high interest costs are incurred, the costs should be increased accordingly. In arriving at production costs, it was assumed that the young animals were raised and fed.

Antimicrobial Stewardship in Swine Medicine
Swine veterinarians have been focused on judicial use of antimicrobials for decades, but judicious use is just one facet of antimicrobial stewardship. Most facets of human medicine now have formal antimicrobial stewardship plans that are required for funding. Given that veterinary medicine is paid entirely by the animal owner, funding mechanisms as an enticement will not drive adoption which leaves regulation to require stewardship plans in the future more likely.

When you compare swine medicine with the traditional 5 core principles of stewardship it is clear that swine veterinarians and animal caretakers already do many things that improve antimicrobial stewardship. As the general public's interest in our animal health and welfare practices increases, a formal stewardship plan is a way to illustrate that we are actually leading other disciplines in preserving antimicrobials for future use.

What you will find within this course are 5 modules that take you from the background of antimicrobial resistance, through the general concepts of stewardship, to a very specific template that you can apply to formulate (or compile current practices) into a formal plan that can be used to drive stewardship internally and describe your stewardship publicly. The plans can coalesce around any size farm, level of production, veterinary practice or corporate organizational level. In other words, a plan can be built at any level that is useful to managing the animals and antimicrobials used to preserve their health.

The course is taught entirely by distance learning using modules prepared by the faculty and staff of the Swine Medicine Education Center at Iowa State University.

Farmer's Tax Guide: For use in preparing 2024 Returns
This publication explains how the federal tax laws apply to farming.

Use this publication as a guide to figure your taxes and complete your farm tax return.

The explanations and examples in this publication reflect the Internal Revenue Service's interpretation of tax laws enacted by Congress, Treasury regulations, and court decisions. However, the information given does not cover every situation and is not intended to replace the law or change its meaning. This publication covers subjects on which a court may have made a decision more favorable to taxpayers than the interpretation of the Service. Until these differing interpretations are resolved by higher court decisions, or in some other way, this publication will continue to present the interpretation of the Service.

Lease Supplement for Investing in Improvements on a Rented Farm
The purpose of this lease supplement is to encourage cooperation between tenants and landowners who wish to obtain needed improvements, facilities, and buildings on a rented farm. Often rented farms are in need of additional buildings, facilities, major repairs, or soil improvements. Many of the additions and improvements that are needed on a rented farm will not be made unless the tenant pays for part or all of the cost. But tenants are not likely to make important contributions toward farm improvements unless they are sure of repayment for any unexhausted value of their investments in case they have to discontinue farming the property.

2022 Summary Report - Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll
The Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll is an annual survey of Iowa farmers. The survey project collects and disseminates information on issues of importance to farmers and agricultural stakeholders across Iowa and the Midwest. The Farm Poll has been conducted since 1982, making it the longest-running survey of its kind in the nation. The survey is conducted by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension Sociology in partnership with the ISU Center for Survey Statistics and Methodology (CSSM) and supported by ISU Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. The information gathered through the annual survey is used to inform the development and improvement of research and extension programs and is used by local, state, and national leaders in their decision-making processes. We thank the many farm families who responded to this year’s survey and appreciate their continued participation.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll. Thanks to the vision of its founder, Dr. Paul Lasley, the Farm Poll continues to be an important tool that helps ISU Extension and Outreach and a wide range of public and private agricultural stakeholders to better understand Iowa farmers’ perspectives and needs.

The 2022 Farm Poll survey focused on a range of issues including farm family quality of life and well-being, farming and traumatic experiences, opinions about what makes a “good farmer,” influence of information sources on decisions, and participation in carbon markets.

Domesticated Animals Factsheet – FSMA Produce Safety Rule
Domesticated animals such as dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, and poultry, as well as wildlife are big challenges to on-farm food safety, both in the field and packing shed. However, handling and monitoring domesticated animals is comparatively easier than wildlife (which is covered in the Wildlife Management factsheet). Although domesticated animals are often used in fields as draft animals, for wildlife management, and to graze on crop residues/culls, the fecal matter left behind in the field can be a significant source of human pathogens, including E. coli O157:H7, Listeria, Salmonella, and Cryptosporidium. Droppings from poultry, wild birds, and even pets are a potential source of pathogens as well. The pathogen load carried by domesticated animals is influenced by a number of factors such as age of animals, type of animal, rearing practices, and other factors. Domesticated animals, if not limited to secured areas on the farm, can cause cross-contamination and result in food borne disease outbreaks.

Measuring Soil Organic Carbon: A Crucial Iowa Resource
This publication discusses how soil organic carbon has a wide range of crucial roles in agriculture. It impacts crop productivity, soil health, the movement of water, and removal of contaminants. Key themes of this publication include how soil organic carbon is closely related to soil organic matter, but the two are measured differently; soil organic carbon is linked to many aspects of soil health such as nutrient exchange, soil water holding capacity, and it provides great value on the farm; carbon markets are focused on changes in soil organic carbon stock that result from the application of new agricultural management practices; and the stock of soil organic carbon in a field is based on organic carbon concentration, depth of sampling, area of the field, and adjustments for other soil characteristics.

The 2021 Farm Poll questionnaires were mailed in February to a statewide panel of 1,781 farmers. Completed surveys were received from 1,095 farmers, resulting in a response rate of 61.5%.

This year’s survey contained questions about community vitality, the impacts of COVID-19, renewable energy, carbon markets, perspectives on the Iowa Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund, and use of various media for information and entertainment.

Corn Quality: Concerns When Grain Does Not Reach Maturity
The 2020 growing season brought challenges to Iowa corn growers. Drought and the August derecho wind damage are the two primary events that may have impacted corn quality and feed value. Grain that does not reach maturity or is stressed during the growing season (weather, nutrients, disease, weed competition) may be more prone to quality issues, and thus require different considerations for handling and storage.

This publication is intended for swine producers who grow corn and manufacture feed on-farm, feed mills, and nutritionists.

Ensuring Farm Building Strength at Critical Connections
Many modern farm buildings built with wooden framing are covered by a skin (or cladding) of ribbed metal sheeting. The combined strength of the framing and metal skin contributes to the economy of this type of building. Some primary structural members, such as wood trusses or laminated wood posts, are pre-fabricated. The majority of the connections between primary structural members, secondary structural members, and the building skin are made in the field, but are critical to the strength of the assembled building. Attention to these connections in design, construction, and maintenance will enhance building strength and longevity.

Using Whole-Farm and Enterprise Records to Make Decisions
Five key measures of financial performance are commonly analyzed: liquidity, solvency, profitability, financial efficiency, and repayment capacity. Together, these criteria measure both financial condition and performance, allowing the owner, as well as a lender or other outside reader, to better understand how well the business is currently doing. The ultimate goal of using any record keeping system is to help make better management decisions. Farm records should allow the owners to compare their operation to others, or to its own history as well as allowing the owners to plan and evaluate proposed projects.

Integrating poultry into an organic vegetable cropping system: benefits, challenges, and considerations
Commonly researched and implemented methods of crop-livestock integration in the United States include grazing livestock on cover crops, rotational grazing of permanent pasture, and grazing livestock on crop residues such as corn or wheat. A less space-intensive alternative for vegetable growers is the use of chickens introduced into a vegetable rotation. One of the advantages of vegetable-poultry integrated systems is the opportunity for an organic producer to integrate chicken production in the farm’s existing cropping system, where chickens provide natural fertilizer for crops. The addition of chickens, along with the already implemented cover crops, could move organic growers closer to their goals of relying upon on-farm produced inputs, or those produced nearby, and meet crop and livestock needs for feed and soil nutrition.

Solar photovoltaic energy for agricultural operations - Farm Energy
The popularity of generating electricity from solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays is growing. Iowa is in the top third of states for harnessing energy from the sun. A combination of new technology, significantly increased production of arrays, and tax incentives have cut the installed cost of solar generation by more than 50 percent in the past several years and greatly changed the economics for those interested in solar. A primary motivating factor for solar installation is to offset electrical consumption and hedge against future costs, but an important secondary factor for some is a desire to "go green", by reducing their fossil fuel consumption.

Iowa Farmers and the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy: 2015 Survey Results
In 2013, the state of Iowa released the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy (NRS). The NRS is a science and technology-based approach to guide actions that reduce the amount of nutrients delivered to Iowa waterways and the Gulf of Mexico. The NRS was developed through a collaboration between Iowa State University (ISU), the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), with support from the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The strategy outlines opportunities and recommendations for voluntary efforts to reduce nutrients in surface water from both point sources, such as wastewater treatment plants and industrial facilities, and nonpoint sources, including farm fields and urban areas.

Swine Industry Module
The learning objectives are as follows: Recognize how the swine industry is divided. Differentiate between management strategies at each stage of swine production. Explain different types of housing used for swine production. Explain different feeding practices for each life stage within the swine industry. Describe major diet components used for swine for each life stage. This grain module is brought to you by the Iowa Grain Quality Initiative, and was produced by the former Crop Adviser Institute.

Click here to access the Swine Industry Module

Learning objective: Understand how the swine industry is organized. Differentiate between management strategies and housing types used in swine production.

Introduction: The swine industry is highly integrated and has found many non-meat uses for swine by-products. In order to protect animals and keep food and by-products safe, swine operations have high biosecurity measures in place.

Animal flow: There are two major animal flow processes utilized in the swine industry: continuous and all-in-all-out. Continuous operations constantly have pigs moving into, within, and off the operation. All-in-all-out operations will completely empty housing facilities for cleaning and disinfecting before the next group of pigs arrive.

Personnel: Personnel required on a grow/finish operation include a farm site manager and a stockperson. The personnel required for a farrowing operation includes a sow farm manager, a breeding and gestation lead, a farrowing lead, and a nursery lead with stockpersons working under each lead position. A farrow to finish site will have each of the employees required for grow/finish and farrowing operations.

Housing types: Pigs can be housed in confinements or outdoors. Confinement housing is in climate controlled buildings that have proper temperature, ventilation, and lighting. Outdoor housing for swine consists of outdoor pens and hoop buildings that provide shelter from harsh weather conditions. The labor input for outdoor facilities is much higher, and the growth and conception rates are lower than those in confinement operations.

Grain Storage Economics Module
Storage is a primary method to ration the use of commodity corn and soybeans once harvested, throughout the marketing year. This grain module is brought to you by the Iowa Grain Quality Initiative and was produced by the former Crop Adviser Institute.

Click here to access the Grain Storage Economics Module

Learning objective: Understand the variables to consider when deciding to store grain or sell immediately after harvest.

Cost of grain ownership: Initial costs after harvest include maintaining quality, transporting bushels to a point of sale, or processing the bushels for livestock on the farm. Quality deterioration is inevitable when storing grain for any length of time, especially if it is not properly dried after harvest. By the spring months, commercial storage costs exceed on-farm storage costs. Interest on debt against on-farm storage facility or debt on borrowed funds could be reduced by selling the grain immediately.

Storage considerations: On-farm drying of grain will extend maximum storage time - 13 to 14 percent moisture, allowing grain to be stored for 6 to 12 months after harvest. Corn sold commercially is adjusted to 15 percent moisture for delivery of sale and 14 percent moisture for bushels placed under warehouse receipt. Cooling the grain to temperatures of 40°F or lower can extend storage time significantly. As it dries the grain will shrink causing fewer bushels to be marketed.

Grain Drying Economics Module
Climate conditions in the upper Midwest states make it necessary for most corn harvested for grain to be dried artificially. Grain producers are faced with a variety of choices when it comes to marketing their crop. This grain module is brought to you by the Iowa Grain Quality Initiative and was produced by the former Crop Adviser Institute.

Click here to access the Grain Drying Economics Module

Learning objective: Understand the economic components of drying grain.

Cost of drying corn on-farm: The cost of drying corn on the farm depends on the size and type of drying system, the amount of moisture in the corn, weather conditions, and the costs of labor, electricity, and drying fuel.

Wet grain at harvest: When grain is wet at harvest, there are several considerations to make in addition to the time of harvest. Most grain buyers assess moisture discounts and commercial elevators charge a drying cost for wet grain.

Other corn drying considerations: Both moisture level and temperature of the grain should be considered.

Storage time: The cooler the grain temperature, and the lower the moisture content, the longer the storage time is for both corn and soybeans.

The Land-Grant Act and the People's College: Iowa State University
The purpose of the Morrill Act of July 2, 1862 was ". . . the endowment, support, and maintenance of at least one college where the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies, and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts, in such manner as the legislatures of the states may respectively prescribe, in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life." The state of Iowa was the first to accept these terms of the Act. Founded in 1858, the Iowa State Agricultural College and Model Farm was further developed in the years following 1862 from the sale of Iowa lands provided for by the land grant within the Morrill Act. As Iowa State University celebrates over 150 years, it is the substance of the land-grant mission that so strongly roots the citizenry of Iowa in higher education. This may be the story behind the Morrill Act; however, questions remain: What was the impact in Iowa? Why was Iowa State chosen as the land-grant school? And what is the impact of the Morrill Act today?

The Land-Grant Act and the People's College: Iowa State University anthology tells the story of the acceptance and impact of the Morrill Act during the formative years of Iowa State. Further commentary is provided through different scholars and contributors lending their distinct voices and interpretations of the land-grant legislation and outcomes to this publication. This anthology includes essays by Dorothy Schwieder, Tanya Zanish-Belcher, Tom Morain, Carole Custer, Allison Sheridan and Lynette Pohlman. Additional contributions by John Anderson, David Bulla, Lea Rosson DeLong, Gregory L. Geoffroy, Phyllis Lepke, Gary Maydew, Barbara Woods, Dan Saftig, and James Zeender.

176 pages, hard bound, full color, 8.5 x 11 in., indexed, includes biographical references and timeline
