Evaluating Record Keeping Systems
The purpose of 4-H record keeping is to teach how to keep records, which is an important life skill. In 4-H, using a record keeping system is a recommended practice for youth in grades 4-12 to track participation, goals, achievements, and reflections throughout their 4-H journey.

Record keeping systems are one way youth might be asked to show evidence of their learning, goal setting, reflection, and growth in project area learning, leadership, civic engagement, or communication to meet award criteria. This guide outlines the information that will help staff and volunteers prepare for the evaluation of record keeping systems for these purposes.

Each new year, millions of Americans make a New Year’s Resolution or a personal goal for self-improvement to work toward in the coming year. Many individuals focus on improving their diet, exercising more, or reducing leisure screen time. However, others may focus on other beneficial actions like daily journaling, practicing daily mindfulness, reducing the use of disposable plastics, or improving their recycling habits. In 4-H, we practice setting goals for project areas and for exhibits. In this activity, you will set a personal goal to work toward this 4-H year.

First Impressions -- Vibrant Clubs
In the United States, a handshake is often used as a greeting. Merriam-Webster's Dictionary defines a handshake as "a clasping, usually of right hands, by two people as in greeting or farewell." Handshakes may also be used to congratulate someone or to formalize an agreement. When you shake hands with someone, you convey a message about yourself. Whether they recognize it or not, people will make assumptions about you based on the quality of your handshake. To make a positive first impression, follow these steps for a confident, comfortable handshake.

Using Committees -- Vibrant Clubs
A committee is a team with a common goal. They work under the leadership of a chair and are supported by the club leader. A committee chairperson may be the vice president of the club (who oversees all committees), may be appointed by the president of the club, or may be a member who volunteers for the task. No matter who the chairperson is, there are responsibilities that must be fulfilled if the committee is to be successful.

Effective committee work is an important 4-H club function. Through effective committee work, club business meetings can be more efficient and allow more time to meet the educational, recreational, and social needs of members.

The Iowa 4-H Club program plan should always include youth voice from members. Youth voice should be included in planning of activities, events, and education as well as financial decisions. Provide opportunities for youth to be involved in financial decisions and plan for educational opportunities to help 4-H youth understand the club finances, guidelines, and appropriate use of club funds.

Ricochet Poster Set
This poster series of three 17" x 22" posters is intended to be used in facilitating "Ricochet: An Extreme Leadership Adventure."

Ricochet: An Extreme Leadership Adventure is a middle school leadership initiative created and sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Iowa 4-H. To Ricochet means to move around with a lot of energy, and be unpredictable - sort of like middle school youth. They bounce from one thing to the next trying on different roles as they find their place in the world. Something else you can't predict: when opportunities for youth leadership will arise, but you can help prepare youth to become leaders. Help them be ready to accept the leadership opportunities that come their way. Ricochet uses adventure and experience to bring about learning. Kids will learn by doing things themselves. You can help them build their leadership skills, as they get involved in a REAL project that their community needs.

Youth-serving organizations in Iowa are encouraged to contact their local Iowa State University Extension and Outreach county office to explore partnership opportunities in administering this program. Additional information on this program is available on the Ricochet webpage, or you may contact the program team with your questions by emailing ricochet@iastate.edu

These posters are a companion piece to facilitating the Ricochet program. The curriculum for Ricochet is also available on the Extension Store and can be found here.

Service Calendar Challenge -- Vibrant Clubs
This activity encourages independent brainstorming and group collaboration through a club planning activity. The club will make plans for one small community service activity each month throughout the year.

Ideally, members will be asked to contribute their time to the group project during the month and bring small donations/projects to the meeting. Their projects will result in a full year of giving back to others.

Club members will learn that civic engagement and community service can be done through everyday small acts of kindness. By working together, great things can be achieved.

Building Blocks of Leadership
Building Blocks of Leadership is a series of mini-lessons geared towards developing leadership skills in youth. These lessons are 20-30 minutes in length and can be incorporated into existing programs such as day camps, 4-H meetings, program area workshops, and afterschool programming.

Designed for grades 6-8, Building Blocks of Leadership can be adapted to meet the needs of a variety of youth audiences, settings, and experience levels of youth.

Lesson 1 What is a leader?
Lesson 2 Learning your strengths
Lesson 3 Communication is key
Lesson 4 Advocating for your ideas
Lesson 5 Thinking outside the box

Each lesson was created to take 20-30 minutes with a group of approximately twenty youth in grades 6-8. Each lesson plan follows the 4-H Experiential Learning Model of Do, Reflect, Apply, with the intent that youth will participate in an activity, share about their experience, and then leave the lesson knowing how to apply the content learned to their daily lives.

Ricochet Facilitator Guide

Additional information on this program is available on the Ricochet webpage, or you may contact the program team with your questions by emailing ricochet@iastate.edu.

The poster set is a companion to facilitating the Ricochet program that is also available here on the Extension Store.
