With his discovery of penicillin in 1928, Dr. Alexander Flemming predicted that in the future, bacteria may become resistant to the antibiotics used to treat them. This prediction has become true as the effectiveness of antibiotics has changed over time due to the bacteria becoming resistant to the drugs through mutations. As more bacteria become resistant, there’s growing concern about antibiotics not working across agriculture and human medicine.
This activity aims to showcase how antibiotics’ effectiveness has changed over time and showcase that it is important to utilize these tools wisely to combat antimicrobial resistance.

One Health: Uniting People, Animals, and Plants for Health -- Vibrant Clubs
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a complex problem to overcome. It takes all industries to work together to combat AMR. The most important approach to overcoming AMR is taking a One Health approach. One Health is a collaborative, multi-sector, transdisciplinary approach to achieving optimal health outcomes among people, animals, plants, and their shared environment. It is important to demonstrate to youth that even with their 4-H projects, they are still part of One Health.
Fighting against germs that resist medicine is really hard. When medicines no longer work to kill germs we call this antimicrobial resistance. To solve this problem, everyone - like doctors, farmers, and scientists - needs to work together. One important way to do this is by using something called the “One Health” approach. One Health means everyone, including people, animals, plants, and the environment they all share, working together to stay healthy. Even kids with their 4-H projects can be a part of this important teamwork!

Veterinary Client Patient Relationship -- Vibrant Clubs
Veterinarian Client Patient Relationship (VCPR) is the established relationship between a veterinarian and the client to optimize the client’s animal’s health. In June 2023, a new law was passed requiring livestock producers to obtain a prescription to purchase certain antibiotics for their animals. The antibiotics that require a prescription are medically important to humans, meaning they are also used in human medicine. Due to the change, you must have a VCPR in place to be prescribed antibiotics for your animals. This change was made to help support responsible antibiotic use through more veterinary oversight to help combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A veterinarian and client working together is crucial for using antibiotics responsibly. Working across animal, human, and plant industries to optimize health for all is called One Health. The One Health approach encourages all sectors to work together to combat AMR.

Competition in horse judging allows you to be the judge of a horse show. You will learn all the body parts of a horse, the ideal characteristics of how a horse moves, and determine how to score horses in competition. And to explain how you decided on your scores. When you get to the senior level of this activity, you could compete in national competitions
The judging contest is a learning experience, where youth judge classes of four horses. Youth make a careful evaluation of horses in a class and place them against an accepted ideal for the breed or discipline shown. The contest provides an educational program for all project members, including those who may not own a project animal.

Snaffle Bit Communication with a Horse -- Vibrant Club Activity
Communication to control the horse when you are riding is relayed by using your hands (rein aids), seat, legs, and voice. Most people place headgear (bridle) on the horse’s head with a bit in the horse’s mouth, and a saddle on the horse’s back. The bridle with a bit will apply pressure on and around the horse’s head and mouth in a variety of places, depending on the type used. The horse learns that pressure in a certain area means to slow down, stop, turn or change their head position.

Horse's Vision -- Vibrant Club Activity
Did you know the horse has one of the largest eyes of all mammals? Most prey animals, such as horses, have eyes set on the sides of their heads, allowing them to see predators approaching from many directions. Horses have excellent capability of seeing movement at a distance. When trail riding, a horse may see a deer run across the trail long before humans would see the deer.
Horses use both binocular and monocular vision. Binocular vision allows the horse to use both eyes together to see directly ahead. However, their depth perception is limited because their eyes are so far apart. Monocular vision allows the horse to see on both sides of their heads, meaning the left eye and the right eye work independently and see different views.

A mnemonic (pronounced new-monic) is a device that is a learning tool used to help memorize things. Biologists often use mnemonics to help learn and identify the different calls a bird makes. It is difficult for humans to mimic the different calls of birds, so biologists will make up words or phrases to help them remember individual calls. Gelatin and Meat Protein -- On the Go Lesson
What is meat? Meat is made up of muscle fiber, connective tissue and fat. Muscle fibers are comprised of protein. Proteins are made up of many chains of amino acids. When you eat meat, the digestive juices in your stomach and intestine break down the meat protein into basic units called amino acids. The amino acids then can be reused to make proteins for your own body. When meat is cooked, a chemical reaction occurs, and the protein is denatured or changed. Use gelatin to explore this concept.

Iowa 4-H Equitation and Horsemanship Skills Assessment
The Equitation and Horsemanship Skills Assessment Program provides an optional, planned progression of skill development to promote safety, equitation, and horsemanship. The program offers a check-list for youth to be involved and succeed, regardless of their riding style, skill, or ability.
The skills are not western, hunt seat, saddle seat, or contest skills. They are skills for all disciplines, riding styles, and uses. These skills were designed for the purpose of promoting safety and knowledge within the 4-H horse project. The skills will give youth a planned progression of horse handling and riding skills and a solid understanding of and ability in horsemanship.
Mastering proper horsemanship skills before progressing to the next level requires patience, maturity, interest, dedication, and time. Youth can practice skills at home, clinics, demonstrations, meetings, camps, etc. As you work with a horse or pony, you want to work at developing self-discipline, patience, self- reliance, responsibility, and pride of accomplishment. Youth should progress through the levels at their own rate to successfully master the skills.

Agriculture Every Day
Agriculture Every Day is aimed at teaching youth in grades 4-12 about the importance of agriculture. All lessons follow the 4-H Experiential Learning Model and include hands-on, fun, and engaging activities. Each short (20-30 min) stand-alone lesson is on a different agricultural science topic. Six of the lessons focus on animal science and six focus on crop science. These lessons are meant to be a sampling of different agricultural science topics. Each lesson can be taught on its own or they can be used together in any order. Each lesson includes target grade level, educational goals for that lesson, educational standards addressed by the lesson, materials needed, and directions for set-up and implementation of the lesson. Here are some examples of how the lessons could be used:
A single lesson can be used as a stand-alone activity for a club meeting, short classroom activity, or afterschool activity.
Multiple lessons could be used over the course of multiple classroom or afterschool visits.
Any combination of these lessons could be used together for a 6-hour program like a day camp.
