Creating an Urban Food Web -- Vibrant Clubs
In every ecosystem, all living beings are connected. All species, from the smallest bacteria to the largest mammal, rely on one another. In each habitat, all species occupy their own specific niche or position within the system. The niche each species occupies is determined, in part, by the food they eat. A food web shows the connections between species based on the food(s) they eat. Like humans, most species will not eat the same food for every meal, meaning species may have multiple things they eat or multiple species that eat them.
In this activity, youth will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of food webs in an urban ecosystem by creating their own webs and reflecting on what they came up with.

Predator Prey Cycle Tag -- Vibrant Clubs
In every ecosystem, all living beings are connected. All species, from the smallest bacteria to the largest mammal, rely on one another. When food is abundant (prey), those that eat the food (predator) will thrive, and their population will grow. Eventually, there may be too many predators, and the prey population may dwindle. When this happens, there is not enough food for the predators, so their numbers drop also. With fewer predators, the prey population increases again, and the cycle continues. In this activity, youth will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of predator-prey cycles and reflect on their experience.

History of Antibiotics and Resistance -- Vibrant Clubs
With his discovery of penicillin in 1928, Dr. Alexander Flemming predicted that in the future, bacteria may become resistant to the antibiotics used to treat them. This prediction has become true as the effectiveness of antibiotics has changed over time due to the bacteria becoming resistant to the drugs through mutations. As more bacteria become resistant, there’s growing concern about antibiotics not working across agriculture and human medicine.
This activity aims to showcase how antibiotics’ effectiveness has changed over time and showcase that it is important to utilize these tools wisely to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Resistant Bacteria in the Environment -- Vibrant Clubs
One Health is a collaborative, multi-sector, transdisciplinary approach to achieving optimal health outcomes among people, animals, plants, and their shared environment. Scientists working with a One Health focus have seen increased antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the environment. Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the environment occur naturally but can also be impacted by humans’ antibiotic use and disposal decisions. This antimicrobial resistance can impact humans if they swim with a cut in a waterway that contains resistant bacteria.

One Health: Uniting People, Animals, and Plants for Health -- Vibrant Clubs
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a complex problem to overcome. It takes all industries to work together to combat AMR. The most important approach to overcoming AMR is taking a One Health approach. One Health is a collaborative, multi-sector, transdisciplinary approach to achieving optimal health outcomes among people, animals, plants, and their shared environment. It is important to demonstrate to youth that even with their 4-H projects, they are still part of One Health.
Fighting against germs that resist medicine is really hard. When medicines no longer work to kill germs we call this antimicrobial resistance. To solve this problem, everyone - like doctors, farmers, and scientists - needs to work together. One important way to do this is by using something called the “One Health” approach. One Health means everyone, including people, animals, plants, and the environment they all share, working together to stay healthy. Even kids with their 4-H projects can be a part of this important teamwork!

Veterinary Client Patient Relationship -- Vibrant Clubs
Veterinarian Client Patient Relationship (VCPR) is the established relationship between a veterinarian and the client to optimize the client’s animal’s health. In June 2023, a new law was passed requiring livestock producers to obtain a prescription to purchase certain antibiotics for their animals. The antibiotics that require a prescription are medically important to humans, meaning they are also used in human medicine. Due to the change, you must have a VCPR in place to be prescribed antibiotics for your animals. This change was made to help support responsible antibiotic use through more veterinary oversight to help combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A veterinarian and client working together is crucial for using antibiotics responsibly. Working across animal, human, and plant industries to optimize health for all is called One Health. The One Health approach encourages all sectors to work together to combat AMR.

Presenting to an Exhibit Judge -- Vibrant Clubs
Exhibiting at Fairs has long been a traditional part of a 4-H member’s learning experience. In Iowa 4-H, we use conference judging for most of our static (non-living) exhibits. Conference judging allows 4-H members to have a face-to-face conversation with an expert to discuss the member’s work. Judges are caring adults trained to use this process to educate, evaluate, and encourage 4-H members. Members who prepare to share their stories with the judge will likely approach the experience with more confidence and greater anticipation.

Circuit Roleplaying -- Vibrant Clubs
Have you ever wondered how your room light turns on, or the fan starts spinning? So many of our household appliances are powered by electricity. Electricity flows from positive (high) to negative (low) through pathways called circuits. Materials that electricity can flow through are called conductors, such as salt, metal, or even people. Materials are insulators if electricity can’t travel through them, such as the plastic coating covering wires or thick rubber gloves technicians wear to protect themselves when repairing power lines. You will build a circuit to turn on a light in this activity!

What is Horse Judging? -- Vibrant Clubs
Competition in horse judging allows you to be the judge of a horse show. You will learn all the body parts of a horse, the ideal characteristics of how a horse moves, and determine how to score horses in competition. And to explain how you decided on your scores. When you get to the senior level of this activity, you could compete in national competitions
The judging contest is a learning experience, where youth judge classes of four horses. Youth make a careful evaluation of horses in a class and place them against an accepted ideal for the breed or discipline shown. The contest provides an educational program for all project members, including those who may not own a project animal.

Snaffle Bit Communication with a Horse -- Vibrant Club Activity
Communication to control the horse when you are riding is relayed by using your hands (rein aids), seat, legs, and voice. Most people place headgear (bridle) on the horse’s head with a bit in the horse’s mouth, and a saddle on the horse’s back. The bridle with a bit will apply pressure on and around the horse’s head and mouth in a variety of places, depending on the type used. The horse learns that pressure in a certain area means to slow down, stop, turn or change their head position.

Horse's Vision -- Vibrant Club Activity
Did you know the horse has one of the largest eyes of all mammals? Most prey animals, such as horses, have eyes set on the sides of their heads, allowing them to see predators approaching from many directions. Horses have excellent capability of seeing movement at a distance. When trail riding, a horse may see a deer run across the trail long before humans would see the deer.
Horses use both binocular and monocular vision. Binocular vision allows the horse to use both eyes together to see directly ahead. However, their depth perception is limited because their eyes are so far apart. Monocular vision allows the horse to see on both sides of their heads, meaning the left eye and the right eye work independently and see different views.

Iowa Pizza Rocks -- Vibrant Clubs
Let’s look at a map of Iowa. Can you find where you live? What places have you been to and what have you seen as you’ve driven around the state? In this activity, we will prepare a pizza that is a geological replica of Iowa! Iowa’s rock and mineral foundation is several layers deep. The oldest layer is on the bottom, followed by the next oldest, then the next oldest, and so on. The layers of the earth under Iowa were molten or fluid initially. They hardened with time and pressure. Our pizza crust and cream cheese represent a common rock that is found in the layers deep below Iowa’s surface. It is called limestone. Limestone is also found on the surface of soil. Older rocks exist below the limestone layer, but we will not discuss that today.

Handshakes may also be used to congratulate someone or to formalize an agreement. When you shake hands with someone, you convey a message about yourself. Using Committees -- Vibrant Clubs
A committee is a team with a common goal. They work under the leadership of a chair and are supported by the club leader. A committee chairperson may be the vice president of the club (who oversees all committees), may be appointed by the president of the club, or may be a member who volunteers for the task. No matter who the chairperson is, there are responsibilities that must be fulfilled if the committee is to be successful.
Effective committee work is an important 4-H club function. Through effective committee work, club business meetings can be more efficient and allow more time to meet the educational, recreational, and social needs of members.
The Iowa 4-H Club program plan should always include youth voice from members. Youth voice should be included in planning of activities, events, and education as well as financial decisions. Provide opportunities for youth to be involved in financial decisions and plan for educational opportunities to help 4-H youth understand the club finances, guidelines, and appropriate use of club funds.

A mnemonic (pronounced new-monic) is a device that is a learning tool used to help memorize things. Biologists often use mnemonics to help learn and identify the different calls a bird makes. It is difficult for humans to mimic the different calls of birds, so biologists will make up words or phrases to help them remember individual calls. For example, the Yellow-Billed Cuckoo has a very distinct call that is difficult to repeat. Instead of trying to mimic the bird, biologists have developed a mnemonic to learn and recognize the call.

Building a Vibrant Club
4-H Clubs are all about youth having fun, making friends, discovering one’s voice, and learning to work with others. 4-H members will come to club meetings when their four needs are being met: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity.
This publication helps club leaders build a vibrant club experience for their members using a building-block concept. The elements of a vibrant club (welcome, recreation, education, and a business meeting) all contribute to one or more of the basic needs.
